Strengthening Road Safety Through Education: The Journey to Curriculum Intergration

<p class="MsoNormal">The National Road Safety Council commenced its two-day Directors' Conference on Road Safety Education in Swakopmund, aimed at incorporating crucial road safety knowledge into Namibia's national school curriculum. The conference, which continues tomorrow, 18 July, aims to build a safer future for learners and support the nation's "Zero Deaths and Zero Injuries" vision.

In his keynote address, Mr. Eliphas Owos-Oab, Chairman of the NRSC, outlined the path forward. He remarked, "Achieving this vision requires more than Infrastructure or enforcement; it demands a shift in mindset. It calls for a culture where safety is valued above convenience, where responsibility is embraced by every road user, and where education is the foundation upon which we build safer communities. This is our collective mission, and it begins with the steps we take today."

Remarks from Dr. Patrick Simalumba, National Institute for Educational Development (NIED) Director, further detailed the integration efforts. He highlighted that RSE was emphasised during Induction Training Workshops for 80 National facilitators for the Junior Primary revised curriculum. Additionally, he noted that Senior Primary phase syllabuses for Grades 4–7 were updated, with RSE included across various subjects like Languages, Life Skills, Social Studies, and Natural Science and Health Education.

Presentations also showcased the successful use of NIED-approved road safety books in junior primary grades and shared plans for involving entire schools through new teaching materials and digital resources. This initiative marks an important step toward long-term road safety education, recognising schools as key partners in continuing safety lessons taught at home.
